Jewelry stacking is all the rage these days, but it actually goes all the way back to the 16th and 17th centuries in Europe. During this time, interconnected wedding bands, called gimmel rings, constructed of two or three hoops were wildly popular. The bride and groom-to-be would each take one hoop from the ring and wear it. Then, on their wedding day, the groom would take his hoop and transfer it to his beloved’s, locking the two parts of the ring together. The completed ring – a stack of hoops – symbolized the couple’s everlasting relationship and love.
